Katie M. Flynn is the author of The Companions, a speculative page-turner to be published by Scout Press/Simon & Schuster in early 2020. Foreign publishers include Heyne Verlag (Germany) and Sperling & Kupfer (Italy).
The Companions is set in a near-future world in which the dead can be uploaded to machines and kept in service by the living. Called “companions,” these post-living souls are taught to obey—but when a 16-year-old companion named Lilac realizes she’s able to defy commands, she runs off in search of the woman who murdered her long ago. This act of rebellion sets off a chain of events that sweeps from San Francisco to Siberia. Lilac’s journey is told from eight points of view: some human, some companion, all of which explore revenge, desire, and the complex shapes love takes when the dead linger on.
Katie M. Flynn received her MFA from University of San Francisco, a Steinbeck fellowship, and several awards for short stories. She serves as fiction editor for Split Lip Magazine and lives in San Francisco.
